The Perry Theater is a great destination for field trips.Jim McClary has spent most of his life bringing first rate, affordable entertainment to families. His innovative approach has included many firsts. Starting with a partner and working part-time, Jim McClary has been in the theater business since 1988 when he purchased The Alex Theatre in Alexandria, Indiana. In 1990 Jim and his partner purchased the Sky-Hi Drive-In Theatre that had over a 500 car capacity. Jim remembered taking his three children to the movies and, because of the cost, was unable to buy them refreshments. He vowed that if he was ever involved in the theater business, he would make his theater family affordable. It was at the Sky-Hi Drive-In that he began his “recycling specials.” If customers brought a clean 32 ounce squeeze bottle or cup he would fill them for half price. People with experience in the theater business said it wouldn’t work, but it proved to be extremely successful. Soon the recycling special included popcorn. If customers brought a clean gallon container, Jim would fill it with popcorn for half price. Over the course of seven years he estimates that his “recycling specials” kept approximately 2,600 bags of trash from going to the landfill. Jim’s recycling specials were equally popular at The Alex Theatre. The Alex soon began hosting Super Bowl parties on its super screen with a video projection unit. The Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 were “blacked out” in the area because of Alexandria’s close proximity to Indianapolis. However, these races could be enjoyed live at The Alex free of charge. Fans regularly showed up an hour and a half before their start in order to get good seats. Some even offered to help with refreshments just so they could get seating priority. In 1993 Jim became the full time owner of The Alex and hosted live amateur boxing matches followed by pay-per-view championship fights. In 1995, in cooperation with Turner Adventure Learning in Atlanta, Georgia, he began hosting educational field trips free of charge for schools. Sponsorships from businesses covered costs. Live question and answer sessions allowed students to fully participate during presentations. Out of approximately 400 sites, The Alex was the only non-school site allowed to carry these field trips. In the late 1990’s The Alex was also the host site for Bill and Gloria Gaither Video Premiers. In 2000 Jim sold the Alex, bought the Perry Theatre, and relocated to Perry, Florida. He strives to make movie watching at the Perry Theatre family affordable entertainment. He hosts movie field trips for schools and special showings for groups. He has remodeled an existing room at The Perry into a Cinema-Sports Conference Room. It features a high-definition projector with a variety of computer inputs that produces a crisp, clear picture on a 13’ x 7’ screen. The room has a capacity for 70 in chair seating. This room can be reserved by groups for watching DVD’s, Internet programs, distance learning programs, birthday parties, or other gatherings. |
